Fear of the dentist can complicate oral health

See the latest resources we use to help those who are afraid of the dentist

Odontophobia (fear of the dentist) is a condition that occurs in a small percentage of patients and can vary in intensity. In milder cases, the patient reports some anxiety and may experience tachycardia, a feeling of panic, excessive sweating, dizziness and even fainting.

In our clinic, we have received reports of patients experiencing tachycardia and perspiration when simply starting a conversation with the dentist. Occasionally, there are cases of odontophobia with atypical symptoms, such as nausea, excessive nauseaand intolerance when touching the mouth.

The team at the ImplArt Clinic provides humanized care, i.e. respecting each patient’s limits so that they feel welcome. This applies to simple procedures such as prophylaxis and restorations, root canal treatment and even surgical procedures such as bone grafting or dental implants.

Fear of the dentist can seriously damage your oral health

Dental treatment for patients with a fear of dentists can be difficult, even for simple procedures such as impressions, cleanings and restorations. In situations of severe phobia, a procedure such as implant surgery or even tooth extractions may be unthinkable for the patient.

As a result of the fear of the dentist, patients often refuse to go to the dentist for years, and as a result, oral problems such as cavities and periodontal infections arise, or even serious problems such as tooth mobility and loss, as well as aesthetic impairment of the smile.

The psychological origin of odontophobia is linked to traumatic episodes (trauma) that have been fixed in the patient’s subconscious, most often since childhood. The phobic patient can be treated with:

  • Psychotherapy
  • Sedation with nitrous oxide – however, in our clinic it has been abandoned because it doesn’t produce good results as it generates very light sedation.
  • Intravenous sedation – the technique is really effective. The patient remains in a state of deep drowsiness during the dental procedure (which can last up to 4 hours). The sedation is administered and monitored by a doctor throughout the procedure.
  • General anesthesia – in extreme cases, where even under sedation the patient still becomes agitated, we can indicate the procedure under general anesthesia in a hospital environment.

Read all the resources for those afraid of dental implants

Due to the inherent difficulty of dental treatment for an odontophobic patient, most of the time we can indicate simpler as well as faster treatments under the Day Clinic system. If you have any further questions or would like to give your testimony, please contact us!

Please note: We do not treat children or special patients.

Testimonials

“Excellent clinic and excellent professionals. I have a phobia of dentists, I had implant surgery with conscious sedation and other treatments over a few months and from start to finish I didn’t feel any pain. I recommend it 100%”

Alessandra Escobar

“I’m very anxious about going to the dentist and I’ve always avoided it as much as possible. Now it’s been five years without treating my teeth, so I ended up losing some dentures, had a lot of cavities and an episode of pain. Then I came across the ImplArt clinic and this sedation technique. It was very easy to have the treatment this way. The doctor who saw me was very attentive and looked after me until the end of the procedure. I also found that the dentist worked quickly and did some implants and treated the cavities while I was asleep. It was a bit magical but when I woke up everything was ready, I thought it was great.”

M.R.R., businesswoman, São Paulo-SP

“I was afraid of dentists, but this clinic gave me confidence and surprised me. Dr. Roberto is an excellent professional, he has a lot of experience and is always trying to learn more and more to be more efficient. I’ve always been very well received. Congratulations to all the professionals at this wonderful clinic, the doctors who are excellent professionals, the receptionists who are always kind and proactive. Thank you especially to Dr. Roberto, Dr. Pedro and Dr. Isabela!”

Karina Nascimento

“Dr. Roberto performed my surgery with great skill and mastery. I felt NO PAIN or discomfort. My recovery was excellent and now I’m going to start the final stage of my treatment. I chose the zirconia crown by scanner, because it’s quick, since I have to finish my treatment soon for a trip.”

Adriana Cardoso

“Anyone who is afraid of getting implants, I’ll tell you one thing: don’t be afraid, it doesn’t hurt at all and the clinic is top of the line. Dr. Roberto, who is the director, is super attentive, Dr. Bruno and Dr. Marcos are excellent professionals, none of the treatments hurt at all. I recommend it to everyone.”

Invisalign transparent aligner

The Invisalign transparent aligner is undoubtedly the most modern and discreet way to align teeth and improve the beauty and functionality of the smile. ImplArt Odontologia is an Invisalign accredited dental clinic.

This modern orthodontic aligner can even help with dental implant treatment. And we’ll explain why: When there is tooth loss that is not immediately replaced with dental implants, nearby teeth tend to move, taking the place of the extracted tooth. As a result, before the patient can receive the implant, space must be “made” by moving the teeth back to their original position so that the site can receive the dental implant. Therefore, in the event of tooth loss, the ideal is to replace the lost tooth with a dental implant as soon as possible.

See below for more indications for using this modern orthodontic aligner.

Aesthetic invisible braces: how the most discreet treatment works

Technological advances in dentistry have also reached orthodontic treatments. It allows us to offer increasingly effective, faster and more discreet treatments, especially for adults who would like to align their teeth and improve occlusion without the use of metal braces.

ImplArt Odontologia offers the modern transparent aligner Invisalign as an orthodontic treatment option. This device is much more discreet than conventional braces.

A worldwide success, the Invisalign clear aligner is an orthodontic appliance with a plate format, i.e. it doesn’t have metal brackets and wires like conventional orthodontic appliances. This certainly gives it a smooth and discreet look, almost invisible.

invisalign transparent aligner
Note that the transparent aligner is fitted to the teeth and is almost imperceptible

Treatment with Invisalign consists of the sequential use of aligners with small adjustments to each one, which lead to progressive tooth movement and consequently improve the occlusion and aesthetics of the teeth.

See how orthodontic treatment with Invisalign works:

  • Our specialized orthodontic team assesses the teeth, occlusion and general oral conditions.
  • A digital mold of your teeth is then taken using the Trios 3Shape intraoral scanner.
  • The images of the teeth form a three-dimensional image of the arches. The digital template, along with intra- and extra-oral photos and radiographic examinations are sent to the manufacturer of the Invisalign aligners.
  • The Invisalign team plans the treatment and then determines the number of aligner plates that will be needed to complete the tooth movement.
invisalign digital treatment flow transparent aligner
  • The plan is sent to our team for approval.
  • If everything checks out, personalized plates are made using computerized techniques and delivered to the patient.
  • Normally, the aligner plate is changed every two weeks until the teeth reach the desired position. This type of aligner allows the movement to be made on all or just a few teeth, depending on each need. In the meantime, the orthodontist and you monitor the progress of the treatment.

Main advantages of the Invisalign transparent aligner

  • It’s practically invisible;
  • It can be removed by the patient for regular oral hygiene and plaque cleaning;
  • Can be removed before meals;
  • It doesn’t interfere with speech;
  • Does not cause irritation;
  • Results between 6 and 12 months on average.
  • You don’t need a lot of time in the office chair to make adjustments;
INVISALIGN ORTHODONTIC ALIGNER
The orthodontic aligner system consists of the sequential use of transparent aligners that are changed on average every 15 days for progressive tooth movement. The aligners are transparent and practically imperceptible in the mouth

Indications for invisible braces

The Invisalign clear aligner can be used to solve a variety of orthodontic problems, from subtle corrections to more complex treatments, either alone or in conjunction with complementary techniques. Some of the cases in which Invisalign aligners can be used:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Separated teeth
  • Dental malocclusion
  • Overbite, open bite and/or crossbite
  • Top-to-bottom bite.

ImplArt Odontologia is a dental clinic accredited to carry out orthodontic treatments with Invisalign aligners. Make an appointment for an assessment and find out if this is the best technique for aligning your teeth.

How much does the Invisalign transparent aligner cost?

Dental treatment prices can only be answered through a dental consultation, which can be in person or via TeleOdontology. This is because dental treatments can only be indicated after a careful assessment of the patient.

There are countless factors that influence the planning of a treatment, materials and techniques, and the professionals involved, all of which affect the amount of the budget. Schedule your appointment by WhatsApp 11 3262-4750.

Full Arch implants: 11 stages of treatment

Learn about the stages of treatment for full arch implant rehabilitation. A full dental implant is a treatment designed to rebuild a new smile when all the teeth in an arch or mouth have been lost. This type of treatment is also popularly referred to as a protocol prosthesis or All on four dental implants, the latter if it involves 4 implants.

The ImplArt Dental Clinic has extensive expertise in full-arch implant treatments, using the best materials to produce the fixed prosthesis for full arch implants in its own dental laboratory, using state-of-the-art computerized techniques. In this way, we offer our patients a choice of different types of dental implants, with different healing times. In addition, patients can choose between 5 different types of fixed prosthesis to be fitted over their implants.

The most modern prostheses today are made of zirconia and use a computerized system to create these highly resistant and aesthetically pleasing prostheses. In addition to zirconia prostheses, there is also the option of zirconia implants.

Most full arch implant cases follow the following treatment steps:

1 – An individual assessment of the case for full arch/full mouth implantation is carried out

Considering the patient’s general and oral health, the volume and quality of bone in the mandible/maxilla, aesthetics, gum shape, among other aspects. To assess bone volume, radiological examinations such as panoramic radiography and computed tomography will be requested.

This stage also verifies the need for bone grafting prior to implant surgery, as well as the need for medical supervision if the patient has pre-existing diseases that could interfere with the success of dental implant rehabilitation.

2 – Treatment proposal

Depending on the information collected and the patient’s expectations, we will present some alternatives for full arch implant treatment with different stages of treatment, techniques and possible materials. The recommended types of dental implant will be presented according to the patient’s case, and they will be able to choose according to their preference. Today there are very modern dental implants and healing times can take between 1 and 6 months, depending on the type. Implants from the Swiss brand Straumann are the ones with the shortest healing times.

3 – Preparing the mouth

With the aim of eliminating sources of infection, such as professional cleaning, treatment of cavities, tooth extractions and periodontal scraping.

4 – Preparation and molds

For provisional prostheses for total implants. The ImplArt dental clinic takes digital impressions with intraoral scanners (without mass).

5 – Installation of full arch implants

Through simple and painless surgery, the implants that will support the fixed prosthesis are inserted. The surgery takes place in a doctor’s office and the patient can go home immediately afterwards. There are modalities with local anesthesia, or with intravenous sedation, if the patient prefers.

There is also the option of performing dental implant surgery using the computerized guided surgery technique.

This technique eliminates the need to make large cuts and sutures in the gums, making the post-operative period easier and the recovery quicker.

The surgical guide acts as a template with indications of where the incisions should be made to place the dental implants. The surgical guide is custom-made according to the patient’s CT scan images, using a 3D printing method.

*Learnmore about dental implants: How is a dental implant done? How to get a dental implant ?

6 – Installation of the temporary prosthesis

On the same day or after a few days. This is one of the most important stages of treatment. The prosthesis can be fixed or removable, depending on the case. The preference is for a fixed temporary prosthesis, unless this is technically impossible.

This first provisional prosthesis for total implants does not always meet all the requirements of aesthetics and function because it is made under adverse conditions, such as pre-existing teeth that make molding difficult. If necessary, we will make new prostheses.

7 – Waiting period

It takes between one and six months for the implants to integrate into the bone (osseointegration) and for the gums to heal.

Fear of Dentists
The first image shows the proof of the zirconia structure in the mouth, and the second shows the finished prosthesis with porcelain and a thin layer of artificial gum
Fear of Dentists

8 – Start of the definitive prosthesis for total implants

If the implants are hidden under the gums, the first step is reopening surgery. This is a simple procedure that aims to expose the implants in the mouth. Then molds are made.

9 – Studies for the definitive prosthesis

For total implants, the aim is to find out which characteristics will be important in order to obtain the best aesthetics and functionality. When the characteristics of the final prosthesis are discussed, the color of the teeth, the shape of the teeth, the volume of the prosthesis and whether or not artificial gums are needed will be defined. The patient takes part in this process and will be able to see the stages of the treatment beforehand, as well as the final aesthetics. The dental implant prosthesis can be made of Zirconia, Porcelain or Resin, each with different characteristics, and the patient’s choice is made right at the start of treatment, so that planning is already carried out in anticipation of the definitive prosthesis.

10 – Delivery of the total implant prosthesis

With the approval of the patient and the dentist, the protocol prosthesis is then given as completed and all stages of the proposed treatment have been fulfilled.

11 – Total implant control and maintenance

Once all the treatment stages have been completed and the protocol prosthesis has been delivered, the patient should return every six months for a check-up and cleaning. Every twelve months we will request a panoramic radiograph to monitor the case internally. Even though the patient has had implants and, in many cases, has had all their natural teeth removed, they should still visit the dentist regularly every 6 months.

Digital Dentistry – High technology applied to dentistry

Digital dentistry and the use of advanced technologies are already a reality in dentistry. The ImplArt Dental Clinic is always investing in technologies that make computer-planned treatments not only faster and more precise, but also more comfortable.

Digital Dentistry – Discover the advantages of using computers in dental treatments

3D tooth printer

3D printers are very versatile, because they are able to build objects of various shapes according to a three-dimensional digital design. Prostheses and dental restorations are also being made using this concept at Clinica Dentaria ImplArt.

We have the two main 3D tooth printers developed in the world: Cerec from the German company Sirona (including the most up-to-date version of the system, Cerec Primemill), and Ceramill Motion II from Austria’s AmannGirrbach. They have robotic arms that mill the chosen dental material (which can be porcelain, ceramic, zirconia, etc.) until it acquires the shape of the computer-designed restoration.

The result is a piece made very quickly, completely customized to the patient’s needs, with perfect color and fit. It is also possible to make an identical copy of the shape of a prosthesis that the patient is already used to, but which needs to be replaced because it has suffered a fracture or was made with unsightly material (metal or stained resin).

digital smile planning computerized treatment dentist, digital dentistry

Digital smile project

We use modern digital dentistry software to design computerized dental treatments. With the help of these programs, we can design aesthetic dental restorations, crowns, dental contact lenses and even full dentures on implants.

We also design orthodontic treatment by simulating tooth movement and planning dental implant treatment. The aim of the digital smile project is to carry out a treatment that seeks to harmonize the functionality and aesthetics of the smile.

We create restorations and prostheses with customized shapes and colors for each patient.

digital scanning teeth digital molding

Intraoral scanner

The intraoral scanner is a high-precision camera that captures intraoral images, i.e. of the teeth and gums. These images are transferred to a computer which creates a three-dimensional digital mold of the dental arches, the basis for planning the entire treatment.

With digital modeling, our team is able to design restorations and prostheses according to each patient’s needs, even mimicking the shades of neighboring teeth.

For the patient, this type of molding is much more comfortable and faster, unlike the old putty molds. Computer modeling also avoids errors in dental prostheses made with conventional putty molds.

Watch a simulation of the digital scan by clicking here.

Computer-guided surgery

Computer-guided total implant surgery is a technique that allows for less invasive, precise and comfortable implant surgeries. It eliminates the need to make large cuts and sutures in the gums, thus making the post-operative period smoother and the recovery quicker.

The main purpose of this feature is to provide the patient with greater comfort, both during the surgical process and in the post-operative period. Find out more by clicking here.

Digital radiology center at the ImplArt Clinic

For your convenience, the ImplArt Dental Clinic has a digital radiology center for carrying out radiological examinations, which are essential for diagnosis and planning/monitoring various dental treatments. Diagnostic examinations certainly play a key role in the planning of an excellent dental treatment by an implant dentist. They are indispensable for planning bone grafting, periodontal grafting, dental implants, total impl ants and protocol prostheses.

In this sense, digital radiology at the ImplArt Clinic is linked to the One Stop Solution concept, where patients can carry out everything from diagnostic examinations to complete dental treatment within the complete structure of the Dental Clinic.

Digital radiographs and examinations at the ImplArt clinic help with rapid diagnosis and treatment planning

The ImplArt Clinic’s digital radiology center facilitates diagnosis and speeds up the start of treatment, since patients don’t have to travel to another address to have their tests carried out.

The ImplArt radiology center is equipped with a state-of-the-art digital x-ray machine (manufactured by Dabi Atlante), which enables digital panoramic x-rays and computed tomography, both with real-time image results.

With these high-precision tests, the diagnosis is made quickly and reliably. They also support treatment planning, avoiding wasted time, unnecessary procedures and possible surgical accidents.

Digital radiography is a way of capturing images by emitting x-rays, but with digital sensors rather than traditional film.

Read more: The use of digital dentistry in our clinic reduces the chance of COVID-19 contamination at the dentist.

Advantages of Digital Radiology

There are many advantages to using digital radiography:

  • Patient exposure to radiation is much lower in digital radiology compared to traditional film.
  • The patient doesn’t have to repeat the examination until the image is good.
  • Diagnoses are faster and more accurate, as the image captured in digital radiology has excellent resolution and the dentist can view it directly on the computer screen (no need to wait for it to be developed).
  • It allows small details such as tooth or root fractures to be analyzed. The dentist can enlarge the image when necessary.
  • It allows interaction between dentist and patient, since with the digital image on the computer screen, it is possible to better discuss the diagnosis and treatment planning.
  • It can be filed in the patient’s chart and opened by any member of the dental team involved in planning and treatment.
  • The test is sustainable, as there is no need to print film or use toxic chemicals to develop it.
Fear of Dentists

Digital radiology – Panoramic radiography

A radiological examination used to visualize oral structures. Here are some situations in which it is very useful in dentistry:

Fear of Dentists

Computerized Tomography (CT-scan)

Thishigh-precision radiological examination, available at the ImplArt Clinic’s Digital Radiology Center, is designed to visualize bone structures. In dentistry, it is very useful because the three-dimensional image makes it possible to analyze teeth, bones, joints, occlusion, soft tissues, nerve pathways, etc. Here are some of the main uses of CT in dentistry.

  • Diagnosing periodontal diseases, even at an early stage.
  • Measuring bone volume for planning dental implant surgery. Knowing the exact measurements of the bone tissue is an extremely important factor when planning dental implant surgery, because in this way it is possible to choose implants with dimensions suited to the needs of each patient and also to respect the limits of the tissues in order to avoid affecting sensitive structures such as nerves.
  • CT assists in what we call computer-guided surgery, a technique that makes surgery precise and less invasive, and therefore with the expectation of a quicker and smoother recovery.
  • Monitoring the implant healing process (osseointegration).
  • Identify possible problems with the implant, especially peri-implantitis (infection around the implant that can lead to mobility or falling out).
  • Identify fractures or defects in the maxilla or mandible that affect the health and stability of teeth or implants.

If you have any questions, please contact us or come and visit us. We at the ImplArt Dental Clinic will be happy to help you.

Why is it necessary to place a post and core to make a dental crown?

The post and core is an important part for installing a prosthetic crown to replace a tooth that has been badly destroyed, usually as a result of decay or fractures. In cases where it is possible to preserve the root with root canal treatment, the core is installed inside the root to support the prosthetic crown.

The core is the internal reinforcement part of a dental crown

This is an important stage in providing support and strength to the porcelain dental crown. See more about dental core materials. If the crown were installed without a core, the prosthesis would probably not be able to withstand the masticatory effort and consequently its duration would be shorter.

See also this article on our blog which talks a little more about root canal treatment, core and porcelain crown. Today, the reinforcement core (dental post) can be made from various types of materials: from metal to zirconia, fiberglass and carbon fiber.

The choice of material depends on a number of factors, such as the location in the dental arch and the masticatory load that the crown will be subjected to.

The metal core is considered more resistant (especially suitable for the most hidden and used area of the arch), while zirconia is considered more aesthetic because it is white (suitable for the most visible area, i.e. the front of the arch).

The prosthetic crown can be made from two different materials: resin (plastic with a metal core) or porcelain (with a metal or aesthetic core). Porcelain is more resistant and aesthetic than resin.

How treatment is carried out:

  • In some cases, root canal treatment is performed to preserve the root;
  • The root and tooth are prepared to receive the core;
  • When made of metal, the impression is taken directly inside the root;
  • When in zirconia, the post is cemented into the root;
  • A core mold is taken to prepare the prosthetic crown. At ImplArt, this mold can be made conventionally (with putty) or digitally using intraoral scanners;
  • The crown is installed on the core;
  • The duration of the procedure varies, as it depends on the complexity of each case. For some people it can be carried out in a Day Clinic.

Advantages of the technique:

  • The dental crown restores chewing ability as well as the aesthetics of the smile;
  • The appearance of this type of prosthesis is very similar to natural teeth, so it is indistinguishable when fitted;
  • Your smile will be beautiful and complete again, free of unsightly spots such as cavities, metal restorations, absences, etc;
  • The roots are protected and healthy;

Dentures are very durable, but they may need to be replaced after a few years. This need is verified during regular visits to the dentist’s office.

In cases where teeth are weakened and it is no longer possible to rebuild the tooth with a crown, dental implants are recommended. If you have any questions, please make an appointment or contact us. We’ll be happy to help you.

Aesthetic oral rehabilitation – Specialist Clinic

Aesthetic oral rehabilitation is a treatment or set of dental procedures aimed at restoring the oral function and aesthetics of a person who is suffering from missing teeth and needs implants, or whose oral function is compromised by other dental problems that affect chewing, speech and the aesthetics of the smile.

Accordingly, depending on the case, single or partial dental implants can be carried out, or so-called total implants with a protocol prosthesis, which are implants for the entire arch. Porcelain crowns or zirconia crowns can be made, designed with modern computerized systems that allow patients to regain their confidence to smile, as well as their chewing function. It is important to note that dental implant surgery is simple, and allows for major transformations in the patient’s life.

Aesthetic oral rehabilitation: which procedures?

In addition, oral rehabilitation also aims to prevent other problems from arising in the future. A complete, better and well-articulated set of teeth will certainly prevent problems with the jaw, mandible and temporomandibular joints.

Day Clinic

The Day clinic is a type of service that carries out one or more dental treatments intensively. In this way, oral rehabilitation can be achieved in the shortest possible time (subject to assessment of the complexity of each case).

One of the main features of aesthetic oral rehabilitation is the porcelain dental crown

This is a dental reconstruction that aims to cover or encase a tooth that has had its structure compromised, or even after root canal treatment. Teeth with a root canal almost always need a reinforcing post to give the dental crown a better structure. The dental crown can be made from a number of porcelain options currently available.

In some cases, dental crowns can be better made in one day with the CEREC 3D dental prosthesis and crown in our clinic thanks to the technologies in our laboratories. Dental posts (cores) can be metal or aesthetic (zirconia or fiberglass).
