Fear of the dentist can complicate oral health

See the latest resources we use to help those who are afraid of the dentist

Odontophobia (fear of the dentist) is a condition that occurs in a small percentage of patients and can vary in intensity. In milder cases, the patient reports some anxiety and may experience tachycardia, a feeling of panic, excessive sweating, dizziness and even fainting.

In our clinic, we have received reports of patients experiencing tachycardia and perspiration when simply starting a conversation with the dentist. Occasionally, there are cases of odontophobia with atypical symptoms, such as nausea, excessive nauseaand intolerance when touching the mouth.

The team at the ImplArt Clinic provides humanized care, i.e. respecting each patient’s limits so that they feel welcome. This applies to simple procedures such as prophylaxis and restorations, root canal treatment and even surgical procedures such as bone grafting or dental implants.

Fear of the dentist can seriously damage your oral health

Dental treatment for patients with a fear of dentists can be difficult, even for simple procedures such as impressions, cleanings and restorations. In situations of severe phobia, a procedure such as implant surgery or even tooth extractions may be unthinkable for the patient.

As a result of the fear of the dentist, patients often refuse to go to the dentist for years, and as a result, oral problems such as cavities and periodontal infections arise, or even serious problems such as tooth mobility and loss, as well as aesthetic impairment of the smile.

The psychological origin of odontophobia is linked to traumatic episodes (trauma) that have been fixed in the patient’s subconscious, most often since childhood. The phobic patient can be treated with:

  • Psychotherapy
  • Sedation with nitrous oxide – however, in our clinic it has been abandoned because it doesn’t produce good results as it generates very light sedation.
  • Intravenous sedation – the technique is really effective. The patient remains in a state of deep drowsiness during the dental procedure (which can last up to 4 hours). The sedation is administered and monitored by a doctor throughout the procedure.
  • General anesthesia – in extreme cases, where even under sedation the patient still becomes agitated, we can indicate the procedure under general anesthesia in a hospital environment.

Testimonials

“Excellent clinic and excellent professionals. I have a phobia of dentists, I had implant surgery with conscious sedation and other treatments over a few months and from start to finish I didn’t feel any pain. I recommend it 100%”

Alessandra Escobar

“I’m very anxious about going to the dentist and I’ve always avoided it as much as possible. Now it’s been five years without treating my teeth, so I ended up losing some dentures, had a lot of cavities and an episode of pain. Then I came across the ImplArt clinic and this sedation technique. It was very easy to have the treatment this way. The doctor who saw me was very attentive and looked after me until the end of the procedure. I also found that the dentist worked quickly and did some implants and treated the cavities while I was asleep. It was a bit magical but when I woke up everything was ready, I thought it was great.”

Technology: metal free prostheses made by computer and AI

The main characteristic of metal-free prostheses is the absence of metal in their structure. For example, they don’t need a metal support for the porcelain to be applied. In this way, unitary prostheses or fixed bridges look more like natural teeth.

Metal-free, computer-engineered prostheses with artificial intelligence AI

The structure of metal free dentures is made of zirconia, a very resistant white ceramic material.

Its light shade is comparable to human dentin, so the inside of the prosthesis is discreet, even when subjected to light.

This is not the case with metal-framed dentures, which can have dark spots in the same situation. The use of dentures and artificial intelligence.

the use of dentures can be optimized with the help of artificial intelligence.

Computer dentures are an effective solution for replacing missing teeth. It can be a single prosthesis or a fixed bridge, providing a more natural look and similarity to natural teeth.

Metal-free dentures are made from zirconia, a resistant white ceramic material that has a light shade similar to human dentin. This ensures that the inside of the prosthesis is discreet even when exposed to light. In addition, the use of dentures can be optimized with the help of artificial intelligence.

More advantages of digital technologies and computerized dentures

In addition, other positive points of computerized dental prosthesis technology are: improved aesthetics, high durability, translucency and little chance of gray spots appearing in the gum areas. At ImplArt Odontologia, the entire molding process for metal-free crowns is done by computerized intraoral scanners.

The digital mold is the basis for planning the prosthesis and the crowns are made using 3D tooth printers. All systems are based on the Cad/Cam system. If you have any questions, please contact us or make an appointment.

Day Clinic ImplArt – Frequently asked questions

On this page, we’ve put together a collection of frequently asked questions from patients about fast treatments with Day Clinic ImplArt (Dental Spa), both for dental implants and other treatments. If your question hasn’t been answered, please comment below or send us an e-mail.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Bring all the X-rays and tests you have so that we can follow the progress of your previous treatments. If you don’t have any tests, we’ll request the ones we deem necessary. Digital panoramic X-rays and CT scans allow us to observe general oral conditions. If you prefer, these tests can be carried out at ImplArt (at a separate cost).

Can I make an appointment and start treatment the same day?

In most cases we can start on the same day, but it’s always best to attend a planning appointment first. We will certainly have to carry out a detailed planning of your case and schedule specific appointments to organize the progress of your treatment.

Is it possible to finish the treatment in a single day?

Only if your treatment is very simple and we have time available. Many dental treatments are complex and, even with all the technology and our own laboratory, it will take a few days to plan and complete the treatment. You will certainly know how long your complete treatment will take once we have analyzed the clinical consultation and your exams.

How many days will my treatment last?

Treatment time will depend on the degree of complexity of your case, the number of teeth involved, the techniques selected and the materials that will be used.

Who will carry out my treatment?

We have a complete team of professionals in all areas of dentistry. In this way, we will assign a specialist to each area in order to carry out the maximum number of procedures in the shortest time, with the highest possible quality.

Can I have my treatment under sedation?

In some cases it is possible to perform intravenous sedation, which can last up to 4 hours. To find out whether you can undergo sedation, you will need a medical assessment.

Is there a hotel near the clinic?

The region is well served by accommodation of different categories. Read an exclusive article on hotel recommendations near the clinic. We can help you choose if necessary.

I live in another state and am planning a trip to São Paulo for dental treatment. How can I get an estimate in advance? In person or by sending some tests (X-rays, photos, etc.)?

We have a structure that allows treatments to be resolved in a shorter time than normal, in line with our Day Clinic philosophy. If you are interested in a more detailed study of your case, it would be very helpful if you could send us a panoramic x-ray and photos of your arch.

We can therefore guarantee that the current procedures are completely painless. Unfortunately, we can’t offer you a quote without first holding a face-to-face consultation and analyzing all your tests. If you have any further questions about Day Clinic ImplArt or anything else, then please contact us.

Oral Rehabilitation – Day Clinic restores the whole mouth

Oral rehabilitation is a practice within dentistry with the aim of recovering or improving the patient’s health, chewing function and oral aesthetics in a complete way, when these are compromised. Aligned with implant dentistry, it allows the replacement of lost teeth with a dental implant, either a total implant with a full-arch fixed dental prosthesis or a partial fixed prosthesis.

This practice is also preventative, as complete and well-articulated teeth prevent problems with the jaw and mandible.

Healthy and beautiful teeth with oral rehabilitation at Day Clinic

Problems that arise as a result of a lack of preventive care can develop, become harmful and much more complex in the future. For a smile to be considered healthy and functional, the entire set of teeth, bones, facial muscles and soft tissues must work together in harmony.

Frequent toothaches or even facial muscle pain, swollen or bleeding gums, plaque build-up, cavities, the absence of one or more teeth, clicking or joint pain when opening and closing the mouth, facial asymmetry, yellowed or stained teeth are some of the signs that something is wrong with oral health and aesthetics.

Complete professional team to carry out your oral rehabilitation in Day Clinic

Oral rehabilitation can involve several dental specialties working together in one day. Just to give an example: periodontics, endodontics, orthodontics, implantology, prosthetics, dentistry and dental aesthetics. With it you can, for example:

  • Treatment of infections and periodontal disease
  • Replacing missing teeth with dentures or dental implants
  • Restoring partially compromised teeth with dental crowns
  • Correct bite problems, dental occlusion
  • Restoring masticatory function
  • Recovering or improving dental aesthetics in general

Oral rehabilitation is planned after a number of examinations have been carried out, such as a panoramic X-ray, so that all the patient’s needs can be known. From there, the multi-specialist team jointly decides on the procedures to be adopted for complete oral rehabilitation.

Oral rehabilitation can be carried out in a Day Clinic* at the ImplArt Dentistry Clinic. Day clinics are ideal for people who need intensive treatment in a shorter time than conventional treatment. In some cases it is even possible for the patient to start rehabilitation in the morning and be discharged on the same day.

The ImplArt Dental Clinic is fully capable of offering oral rehabilitation treatments in a Day Clinic*, because it has a multi-specialist dental team and a complete structure, with a prosthetic laboratory, digital panoramic X-ray examinations and computerized systems. This certainly guarantees agility and peace of mind so that the patient can achieve oral rehabilitation in one place.

Pure zirconia dental crowns – the strongest material for crowns

Zirconia crowns are dental prostheses indicated for restoration and dental rehabilitation in people who have had damage to one or more teeth. Rehabilitation with dental crowns aims to restore the aesthetics and functionality of the smile, improving not only chewing, the appearance of the teeth, but also self-esteem.

Zirconia crowns: excellence for aesthetic results

However, some materials used to make dental crowns are not strong enough to be used in patients suffering from bruxism. As is well known, bruxism is a disorder of oral function movements, characterized mainly by involuntary grinding or clenching of the teeth.

Pure zirconia crowns. Translucent zirconia is 10 times stronger than ordinary porcelain.

It occurs mainly during sleep. This excessive load on the teeth and musculoskeletal structures of the face can cause problems with the teeth and correct occlusion in general.

Although the cause of bruxism is not very clear, it is certain that this condition most often affects people who suffer from emotional problems, such as stress, anxiety and excessive worry.

Just as the excessive force generated by bruxism can wear down teeth, it can also damage dentures made of certain materials.

In these cases, our team has the option of recommending porcelain crowns with a pure zirconia internal structure, which are proven to be more resistant and can withstand a greater load, even in patients with bruxism.

Zirconia acquires this strength because it goes through a controlled process called sintering, which is heating it at a high temperature in a special furnace. This process modifies its particles, creating a solid and very strong prosthetic piece. Other properties of crowns with a pure zirconia structure:

How do I know if I can have a crown with pure zirconia even if I have bruxism?

First of all, it’s important to assess the degree of oral impairment that bruxism has caused so far. If you have untreated bruxism for many years, there may be advanced wear of the dental crowns and/or root fractures.

Therefore, before receiving prosthetic crowns to rehabilitate and restore your smile, you will probably need to undergo treatment to correct these defects (e.g. root canal treatments, vertical dimension increase, clinical crown increase). Dr. Markarian, our general manager, saysthat controlling bruxism is essential to avoid future problems and porcelain crowns with a pure zirconia structure may be indicated.

ImplArt Odontologia has its own dental laboratory with the Cerec 3D, Cerec Primemill, Trios 3Shape and Ceramill systems, which speed up the fabrication of crowns with pure zirconia and metal-free ceramics, in some cases even in just a few hours in an ImplArt Day Clinic or Dental Spa, where you can carry out the largest number of dental procedures in just one appointment or in just a few days. This way, patients can set aside a day in their schedule or a few days in a week to dedicate to dental treatment, without it taking months to complete.
