Dental implants under sedation for those afraid of the dentist

What is sedation?

Now those who are afraid of the dentist can rest easy. Simple or complex dental procedures can be carried out in a dentist’s office under intravenous sedation. The technique allows the odontophobic patient’s level of consciousness to decrease at the time of the procedure, but does not affect their ability to breathe and respond appropriately to physical stimulation and verbal commands.

It is important to note that the ImplArt Clinic team provides humanized care, in other words, respecting the limits of each patient, so that they can feel welcome and at ease. This applies to simple procedures such as prophylaxis and restorations, root canal treatment and even surgical procedures such as bone grafting or dental implants.

How is sedation carried out?

Before the procedure begins, an anesthesiologist applies a sedative medication intravenously. Dental treatment is then carried out by the dentist. This treatment can be as simple as a prophylaxis or include a dental implant or bone graft. In the meantime, the anesthesiologist remains in the room throughout the procedure or surgery, monitoring the patient and also following their recovery. There is also nitrous oxide conscious sedation, in which the patient breathes in a gas (nitrous oxide). However, at ImplArt we only offer intravenous sedation. We don’t use gas because it doesn’t offer enough reassurance to a patient who is afraid.

Why sedate?

You may be a candidate for sedation if you have odontophobia (fear of the dentist), fear of pain, get irritated by the noise of the motor, don’t like the anesthesia needle, are afraid of the dental office, afraid of blood, dental drills, etc. In this way, the procedure becomes simple for the patient, because when they wake up, all the work has already been done. It also offers convenience, as sedation is carried out in the dental office without the need for hospitalization. Even if conscious during the procedure, the patient doesn’t remember what happened.

Is it a general anesthetic?

Sedation is not general anesthesia. General anesthesia uses more powerful drugs and the patient becomes unconscious, needing the aid of breathing apparatus. During simple sedation, the patient remains drowsy but awake (conscious).

What do you feel during sedation?

Sedation by vein gives the patient a feeling of comfort, as they almost fall asleep but remain conscious. It also makes the dentist’s job easier, as he uses fewer anesthetics and can work more quickly.

What procedures can be done under sedation?

Simple or complex procedures can be carried out. In most cases, the dentist can take the opportunity to carry out several treatments in one day, in what is known as a Dental Day Clinic or Dental Spa. Examples of treatments that can be carried out under sedation are: fillings, cleaning, surgery, dental implant surgery, tooth extraction, wisdom tooth extraction, periodontal scraping, tooth whitening, among others.

Who can do it?

Any patient in good general health can undergo this technique. First of all, the anesthesiologist will check whether you can undergo the procedure, or if there are any restrictions, and may request some tests. Please note: we do not treat children or special patients.

Testimonials

“Excellent clinic and excellent professionals. I had a phobia of dentists, I had implant surgery with conscious sedation and other treatments over a few months and from start to finish I didn ‘t feel any pain. I recommend it 100%” – Alessandra Escobar

“I’m very anxious about going to the dentist and I’ve always avoided it as much as possible. Now it’s been five years without treating my teeth, so I ended up losing some dentures, had a lot of cavities and an episode of pain. Then I came across the ImplArt clinic and this sedation technique. It was very easy to have the treatment this way. The doctor who saw me was very attentive and looked after me until the end of the procedure. I also found that the dentist worked quickly and did some implants and treated the cavities while I was asleep. It was kind of magical, but when I woke up everything was ready, I thought it was great” – M.R.R., businesswoman

Periodontal disease: how do I know if I have it?

Periodontal disease is characterized by the formation of a space between the gum and the tooth, a periodontal pocket, which helps to accumulate food debris and bacteria. It is the main cause of tooth loss in adults. As in all cases, only a dentist can determine with certainty the patient’s condition and what treatment should be carried out.

Periodontal disease self-examination

But people can find out more quickly at home what their problem is. In the case of periodontal disease, the most characteristic sign is bleeding gums. In addition, changes in the position of the teeth, swollen gums, tooth mobility, receding gums, bad breath and food retention are signs that the disease may already be present.

Periodontal disease is caused by bacterial plaque adhering to the tooth. Bacterial activity in this area releases toxins that initially cause the gums to loosen, making room for infection inside. This infection leads to the progressive deterioration of the supporting tissues of the teeth and in advanced cases, they become soft and fall out.

However, changes in the gums can also be associated with emotional causes, medication or low immunity. That’s why it’s important to have a consultation to assess the causes.

periodontal disease stages

Treatments for inflamed gums

For treatment, the patient must go to the dentist who will remove the plaque by scraping and smoothing the roots of the teeth. Surgery may be indicated if the aforementioned procedures do not reach the entire area of the compromised root. Even with proper treatment, there may be sequelae such as displacement in the position of the tooth, bone loss and gum recession. Surgical and prosthetic procedures are available to reduce these effects.

If you’re noticing any of these symptoms of periodontal disease, make sure you schedule an appointment to start proper treatment as soon as possible, and thus avoid more serious problems such as tooth loss.

Odontophobia – The fear of the dentist can ruin your life

Odontophobia is a term that defines a person who is afraid of the dentist, i.e. the patient may experience symptoms ranging from mild anxiety to panic, dizziness and fainting. Other patients experience nausea or motion sickness during dental treatment.

It is important for patients to know that the ImplArt Clinic team provides humanized care, in other words, respecting the limits of each patient, so that they can feel welcome. This applies to simple procedures such as prophylaxis and restorations, root canal treatment and even surgical procedures such as bone grafting or dental implants.

The dentist for phobics can help you take care of your oral health

This condition often leads to people neglecting their oral health and putting off important care at an early stage.

This leads to problems such as cavities, plaque buildup, gingivitis, periodontal disease, root canal problems, fractures, dental malocclusion, tooth mobility and dental aesthetics, among others. Many of these problems, if not treated in time, can lead to tooth loss.

We at ImplArt Odontologia understand that this is a serious issue. We know that many patients who seek dental care carry expectations and anxieties, and some even have bad previous experiences.

That’s why we strive to provide patients with a calm and transparent service, especially those with odontophobia.

Sedation procedure helps with odontophobia

In moderate cases of odontophobia, dental procedures can be carried out under intravenous sedation, in which the patient remains in a state of deep drowsiness throughout the procedure.

Sedation is completely safe, as it is carried out by a specialist doctor who first interviews the patient and requests complementary tests (if appropriate), and monitors the patient’s functions while all the dental procedures take place.

When all the procedures are finished, the doctor stops the sedation and the patient wakes up instantly without any difficulty. In extreme cases of odontophobia, dental procedures may be performed under general anesthesia in a hospital setting.

The ImplArt Clinic performs implants at the Oswaldo Cruz Hospital in São Paulo.

Dental Day Clinic Dental Spa by ImplArt

Fast and comfortable dental treatment

The simplest solution is to opt for the Dental Day Clinic, or ImplArt Dental Spa, where you can carry out as many dental procedures as possible in just one day at one appointment. This way, patients can set aside a day in their schedule or a few days in a week to dedicate to dental treatment, without it taking months to complete.

Procedures and visits are carried out in such a way that they don’t affect your day-to-day life, reducing the time you spend at the dentist. Sometimes we schedule quick DayClinic treatments for special dates such as weddings, Valentine’s Day or the end of the year.

Some quick dental treatments:

These are, for example, the procedures that can best be carried out at the Dental Day Clinic. However, we can virtually carry out treatments in all dental specialties, just by planning ahead. In the case of braces (orthodontics), we can schedule quick treatments with specific braces, but in this case we are talking about months of treatment and not days.

The best way to define what will be done is to have a prior plan based on the patient’s needs and wishes. In this way, the dentist will define the sequence of procedures and how they should be carried out.

The Day Clinic is only possible because ImplArt has a complete structure, so that patients don’t need to go to other addresses to complete their treatment. The durability of treatments carried out quickly in a Day Clinic is the same as that of a treatment carried out at a normal pace.

Complete structure for your Day Clinic

ImplArt has its own dental laboratory within the clinic, which certainly facilitates the rapid completion of work while maintaining high quality materials. The laboratory’s focus is on using high-tech materials such as zirconia and special porcelains by means of computerized Cad/Cam projects and execution by 3D tooth printers.

Another facility is that radiological examinations can be carried out in the clinic, thanks to our digital radiology center. Panoramic radiographs and CT scans with real-time results help with rapid diagnosis and the appropriate course of action.

Another novelty at Implart is sedation dentistry, where the patient remains relaxed throughout the procedure. They are best suited to people who are afraid of going to the dentist, of dental treatment or of the famous “dentist’s machine”, the motor. For patients with health problems that require care, we can schedule a Day Clinic at the hospital (*valid for some types of treatment).
